Jumping into Part 3 in this series, we focused on how to find godly counsel and how to engage in that process.

We started by defining godly counsel, using Jesus’ description of the Holy Spirit as our basis (John 14:25-27, 15:26, 16:12-14):

Godly counsel is a person or group of persons who are filled with the Holy Spirit and who advocate, help, and intercede for you by glorifying Christ and pointing you back to Jesus.

We reviewed the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and Proverbs 15:22, 17:17 to establish the biblical basis for why we need godly counsel to help us walk in victory from the sin that opposed us in our lives.

Then we jumped into the “how.”

How to Identify Someone who can provide Godly counsel –

  1. Start with prayer. Asking God to lead you to the person or people whom He has called to walk with you in your battle against sin.
  2. Examine people’s fruit. Jesus told us that we can tell who people are by their fruit. We addressed the biblical way to do this.
  3. Connect with others. We reviewed some things that we had covered in Episode 5: Christ-centered Fellowship, and addressed how to overcome the obstacles that keep us from connecting. We also provided simple examples of ways to connect with others even in the midst of COVID restrictions.

Finally, we talked about how to be involved in the process. There were 5 things we mentioned were essential for you to bring to the table if you were going to benefit from godly counsel.

  1. Humility
  2. Not hiding in shame
  3. Honesty, not self-deprecation
  4. Responsiveness
  5. Interdependence not dependence

We explained each one of these with greater detail to help you understand and visualize what it would look like for you to receive and engage in godly counsel so that you can walk in the freedom that Christ intends for you to have.
