The Lord Himself Goes Before You
What an amazing promise. These words were spoken by Moses to Joshua as an encouragement in his commission to lead God’s people into the promised land. No doubt, the call placed over Joshua’s life must have felt tremendously weighty. Not only was Joshua proceeded by a great man of God, he was now going to step into that role in the new context of taking new territory against nations that were far stronger than he and his people.
But the task was never meant to be something that he would do alone. And it wouldn’t be his knowledge of the past, his leadership experience, the support of the people, or anything else that would see him through this. It would be the reality that God Himself would go before him. He wouldn’t be proceeded by his own reputation. It wouldn’t be the stories of his exploits that would make a way for him. It would be God. The God who saves. The God who makes a way. The Lord God who rescued His people from slavery. He would be the One to go before Joshua and the people of Israel in order to secure the promise.
This continues to be true today. There is a calling over the Good and Faithful to bless the nations and advance the Kingdom of God. We do not wrestle with flesh and blood. Our adversary is like a roaring lion that is always on the hunt, looking to kill, steal, and destroy. We cannot resist him on our own, for we are weakened by the flesh. How in the world can we be expected to carry out such a great calling with everything stacked against us?
As Moses told Joshua, so too we are encouraged to be strong and courageous for it is the Lord Himself who goes before us.
