He is Faithful

Matthew 25:21 Well done, good and faithful servant. Christian blog about God's faithfulness. 2 Timothy 2:13

Knowing the character of God is one of the most important aspects of being among His Good and faithful. Following after Christ is challenging. He said so Himself.[1] But it often helps us stay the course when we know Who it is we are following, and just how wonderful His character really is. Having a limited view of God is inevitable on this side of Heaven.[2] But thanks to the testimony of His Word and the experiences we have by His Spirit and through His people, we can certainly come to know the character of God in such a way that empowers us to walk behind Him as His Good and Faithful.

There are many ways to describe God’s character. He is patient, He is kind, and He is filled with mercy. He is honest and caring. He is humble and meek. Among the many ways we can accurately describe God’s character, we can confidently say that God is faithful.

God is so faithful, one can say that faithlessness is an abomination to God. It goes directly in the opposite direction of who He is and what He stands for. He is literally unable to be faithless.[3] If He were able to be faithless, He wouldn’t be the God we know. He wouldn’t be the One who formed the heavens and the earth. The One who has revealed Himself in His creation - who has revealed Himself in His Word. He wouldn’t be the One who loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die on our behalf so that through His sacrifice we could once again be reconciled to Him.

God’s faithfulness is such an important part of His character that we as His Good and Faithful must be well acquainted with. It’s recognizing that He is faithful that helps to sustain us when we are not. When we fall short of His glory, we know that because of who He is, He will continue to work in us to complete the work He started.[4] As we examine the history of His people, we see more clearly that it has always been because of His faithfulness that His people were carried forward in His purpose and calling for their lives. Not the faithfulness of His people.

That’s why we call ourselves His Good and Faithful. Not because we think we are either good or faithful. But because we know He is. We know He is good. We know that He is faithful. We know that when He creates, He steps back to examine His handiwork and sees that it is good.  And “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” It’s because of His faithfulness that we can move forward into what He has called us to; blessing the nations and advancing His Kingdom.
