A Royal Priesthood

Christian blogs with bible verses about faithfulness intended for the good and faithful servant. Written as part of a devotional series by a christian apparel brand

The concept of a priesthood is so very rich with meaning and biblical history. But looking simply at what the Apostle Peter wrote in his first epistle, we see an aspect of being priests that we hope is inspiring and empowering for you today.

He says, “you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5 NIV)

The first thing we want to capture is that Peter is not only addressing his letter to clergymen. He addressed his letter to all the people of God who had been dispersed in various parts of the known world because of their faith in Christ Jesus. This means that his statement is really addressed to all of us. “You also.”

Secondly, we want you to see that God is in the middle of building you into something more. He is building all of us, you also, into a spiritual house. A family. Not a building. But a people. Like Pastor Charles shared in his most recently blog, you ARE the Church! You ARE the house of God. And He isn’t doing this just for fun. He doesn’t have you in the midst of a trial or challenge for no reason. He has a purpose for it all. He is making a spiritual house, for the purpose of having a holy priesthood.

Lastly, we want to help you see that as a member of His holy priesthood, you have a special calling over your life to offer spiritual sacrifices to God through Jesus Christ. But what spiritual sacrifices? Consider what Paul writes in his letter to the Romans:

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1 NIV emphasis mine).

As members of God’s house, called to be a holy priesthood, we are charged with offering our own lives as sacrifices to God. In response to the great love with which He loved us, giving Himself freely for us, we are invited to give ourselves freely to Him. Living as if it is Christ living in us.

So, today, as God’s Good and Faithful, we exhort you to live in a manner worthy of the calling God has placed on you.
