The Bible: The Handbook for Life

As the Good and Faithful, we believe that the Bible is the Handbook for life. The reference “handbook” denotes that God’s divine Word has everything necessary for us to live a holy life on this planet. The Bible also contains humanity’s purpose in being created in the first place. According to 1 Corinthians 10:31, Romans 11:36, and Psalm 73:25-28, that purpose is to “glorify God and enjoy Him forever”.[1] We glorify God when we devote our lives to loving Him and serving Him. We glorify God when we hear His commandments and do what He says. We glorify God when we disregard our will and submit to His will for our lives.

But what is the duty of man? What are we to do as God’s creation? The Preacher says in the Ecclesiastes 12:13 (ESV), “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” The Hebrew word for fear used here is “yareʾ” and it denotes reverence, awe, or righteous behaviour. As the Good and Faithful we are to revere and stand in awe of God. This reverence should move us to obey everything He has commanded in His word. The ability to stand in awe of God is mediated by the Holy Spirit who brings an understanding of who God is to our human minds and hearts. This entire process is a gift of God given to us through Christ Jesus. Therefore, it is thus clear that the reason we are here and what we are to do is found in God’s Word.

In the Apostle Paul’s correspondence to the young pastor, Timothy, he reminds him of a necessary truth. As Timothy is preparing to lead the church of Ephesus, Paul wants him to never forget that his greatest tool is God’s Holy Word. He tells him, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”.[2] Simply stated, the Bible is good for everything the Christian needs to glorify God through their lives. It is an understatement to say that without the Bible it is impossible to live according to God’s will. Not having the Bible is like trying to put together a piece of IKEA furniture without the instructions. Yeah, nearly impossible!

So what is the punchline in this blog? What are we supposed to step away with this time around? Quite simple. Without the Bible, it is impossible to live a successful Christian life as the Good and Faithful. The Bible is the Handbook for life and is necessary to discover God’s will for your life. So pick it up. Devote time to reading it. Ask God for insight and understanding. Choose a time each day and begin to form a healthy habit of intaking God’s word. Before you know it, the Holy Spirit will use His words to change your life. As you begin to transform from the inside, the people you know will see it from the outside and glorify your Father who is in heaven.[3]
